Abu Sa’id reported that the Prophet, peace be upon him, asked, “Can anyone of you recite a third of the Qur’an during the night?” The Companions considered this rather difficult and they said, “Who among us can do so, O Prophet of Allah?” Thereupon the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, “(Say:) He is Allah, the One and Only; Allah, the Eternal, Absolute; He begetteth not, nor is he begotten; and there is none like unto Him.”

(The reference here is to recitation of Surah 112 (Suratul Ikhlas) of the Qur’an, which the Prophet, peace be upon him, described as equivalent to reciting one-third of the Qur’an. This hadith is reported by Bukhari, Muslim, and Nasa’i)

Learning Arabic has always been my wish and a huge regret of mine not having learned it in my youth while I had the chance. I’ve made several half hearted attempts since by taking several formal and semi-formal classes and although now I can understand spoken and written Arabic to some extent, I am nowhere near to be able to converse with someone. To help keep up with what I’ve learned and to improve upon it, I found this great list of resources on the blog musings of a muslimah and I thought I’d share them with you.

The Prophet said, “Allah will give shade, to seven, on the Day when there will be no shade but His. (These seven persons are)

a just ruler,

a youth who has been brought up in the worship of Allah (i.e. worships Allah sincerely from childhood),

a man whose heart is attached to the mosques (i.e. to pray the compulsory prayers in the mosque in congregation),

two persons who love each other only for Allah’s sake and they meet and part in Allah’s cause only,

a man who refuses the call of a charming woman of noble birth for illicit intercourse with her and says: I am afraid of Allah,

a man who gives charitable gifts so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given (i.e. nobody knows how much he has given in charity),

and a person who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes are then flooded with tears.”

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The rider should first greet the pedestrian, and the pedestrian the one who is seated and a small group should greet a larger group (with as-Salam-u-’Alaikum).

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Six are the rights of a Muslim over another Muslim. It was said to him: Allah’s Messenger, what are these? Thereupon he said: When you meet him, offer him greetings;when he invites you to a feast accept it. when he seeks your council give him, and when he sneezes and says:” All praise is due to Allah,” you say Yarhamuk Allah (may Allah show mercy to you) ; and when he fails ill visit him; and when he dies follow his bier.

“the first gift made to the Messenger of Allah after he took up residence in the home of Abu Ayyub, was brought to him by myself. It was a big wooden bowl filled with bread crumbled up with milk and butter. I told him that my mother had sent him the bowl. He commented “may Allah bless her”. Then he called over his companions and they ate. Then a wooden bowl came from saa’d ibn ubada. It was bread mixed with meat gravey. Zaid ibn Thabit then says “not an evening went by without there being at the door of the messenger of Allah three or four people who would come one after the other carrying food. He remained there at the home of Abu Ayyub for seven months”.
